Adult and Child Foster Care
A social worker completes orientation, licensing and re-licensing of family foster care and adult foster homes. A social worker will also assist in the training and on-going support of foster care parents.  
Adult Protection
Adult protective services provides assessment and protective services to vulnerable adults who may be experiencing abuse or neglect. 
Adult Services
Adult protective services provides assessment and protective services to vulnerable adults who may be experiencing abuse or neglect.  
Adult Mental Health
A social worker can provide services to an adult with a serious and persistent mental illness. If eligible, services may include:

  • Case management
  • Crisis intervention
  • Information and referral

Chemical Dependency
Polk County residents may request a chemical dependency (CD) assessment when they are experiencing problems at home, at work, in the family or community due to their use of alcohol or drugs.  
Child Protection
Child protection social workers assess reports of maltreatment of children in cooperation with law enforcement personnel. Along with the help of other service providers, Social Services may provide protective services to children and families such as:

  • Assessment
  • Individual and family counseling
  • Case management
  • Out-of-home placement

Providing children's health and safety needs are met, reunification with parents is the preferred goal of services.  
Child Welfare and Children's Mental Health
Social Services can assist families parenting difficulties or child behavioral issues, minor parents, and families with emotionally disturbed children. Depending on eligibility and availability, services may include:

  • Case management
  • Information and referral
  • In-home family/parenting support and guidance.

Child Care Licensing
Staff complete orientation, licensing and re-licensing of family child care and group family child care homes.   They also assist in the training of child care providers.

Developmental Disabilities

Polk County can provide case management services for DD adults or children. Depending on eligibility and availability, a person with developmental disability may be able to access a wide range of services including:

  • Semi-independent living services
  • Supported living services
  • Respite
  • Personal care attendants
  • Habilitation and training services
  • Supported employment services.

Home and Community Based Services (including DD waiver)
Polk County Social Services provides a range of services for adults and children who need assistance to remain living in their homes and community with the maximum level of independence possible.  These services are provided under a variety of waiver and other programs that vary as to the population served and eligibility criteria.
