First-Time Minnesota Identification Card
For first time Minnesota identification card owners, you must present two acceptable forms of identification, at least one of these must be considered a "primary document." A complete list of acceptable forms can be located on the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's website.
Most common forms of identification include:
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Certified Birth Certificate
- Certified copy of school transcript
- Employment Authorization Card
- Foreign Passport with proof of legal entry (I-94, I-551)
- Out-of-state identification card or driver's license
- Permanent Resident Card
- Primary Documents
- Secondary Documents
- Social Security Card
- United States Passport
Obtaining Identification Card
To obtain your identification card you must:
- Present any documentation that makes you eligible for limited mobility or reduced fee identification indicators.
- Take photo
- Pay the current fee. Current fee information for an identification card is available at Driver & Vehicle Services (DVS)
